Lump Sum Alimony and Child Support

In some states, including California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, current alimony is a factor in calculating child support.

What if the party is paying the negotiated monthly alimony in a lump sum instead of monthly?

How should child support reflect that fact?

One approach would be to calculate child support with the spousal support amount that would have been paid.

The argument would be that he is paying it, just in a lump sum, and the child support calculation should reflect that.

Another approach would be to proceed as if no alimony is being paid.

That is tempting, because, formally, alimony is not being paid.

But that approach does not reflect the reality of the situation as well as entering the negotiated monthly alimony amount would do.
