As you may know, the IRS is making advance payments on account of the Child Tax Credit, starting July 15, and continuing monthly throughout the remainder of 2021.
What you may not know is that the IRS is actually willing to send these payments even to people who never filed a tax return!
The IRS has provided a place that these people can log in and enter their information. The IRS will then determine whether they qualify.
The information IRS will request includes:
- Name
- Address
- Date of birth
- Valid Social Security numbers (or other taxpayer IDs) for the person and dependents
- Bank account number, type and routing number, if they have one (for the payment!)
- Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) they received from the IRS earlier this year, if they have one
Also, clients may also use this tool if they did not get the full amounts of the first and second Economic Impact Payment (stimulus checks).
This might be the case if they were not required to file a 2020 tax return, because their income was too low. (For example, for the 2020 tax year, no return was required for individuals under age 65 with a filing status of single if their annual income was under $12,400.)
If this is the case, and they want to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit and get their third Economic Impact Payment, they should also use this site.
